Everything Is Changing! In 2026, Airbnb Officially Enters the Era of Monetizing Traffic
If you are an Airbnb host and prepare six months later than others, you may once again miss a wave of opportunity.
Today, I want to share an assessment of a trend.
First, this is not an official announcement. It is a directional judgment inferred from conversations with some Airbnb employees, discussions among industry hosts, and signals from past interviews with Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky.

We believe Airbnb may formally enter the era of monetizing traffic in 2026, and this change could profoundly affect hosts.
1. Services and Experiences: the foundations of a traffic strategy are already in place
Looking back at 2025, Airbnb introduced Services and Experiences, including in-home massages, private chefs, photographers, guides and local activities.
Many hosts initially asked, “What does this have to do with me?” But from the platform’s business perspective, it looks entirely different.
The products are already live. What is really missing if the next step is to grow revenue?
Not supply, but traffic.
Airbnb is currently testing a mechanism on a small scale: if a host recommends an Experience or Service to a guest who completes a purchase, the host may receive a referral commission of around US$15.
The amount may not be remarkable, but the signal is clear: Airbnb is turning hosts from people who receive allocated traffic into people who create traffic. Hosts are becoming entry points to the platform, rather than merely accommodation suppliers.
Snowball Rentals therefore recommends that hosts personally try an Airbnb Service or Experience now. Understand the user journey, observe where guests are most likely to decide to purchase, identify recommendable resources near your property, and determine which products convert most easily.
The earlier you prepare, the more likely you are to benefit.
2. Testing influencer referrals: the platform begins rewarding people who bring traffic
Alongside host referral commissions, Airbnb is running small-scale tests of paying influencers to direct traffic to the platform.
The logic is the same as hosts earning commission for recommending Experiences: whoever brings traffic can share the revenue. Although the tests involve only some opinion leaders, the direction is clear.
Airbnb is gradually evolving from an accommodation booking platform into a traffic platform.
Traffic is becoming a core asset rather than a supplementary resource. Many hosts ask whether they could eventually partner with influencers or travel agencies to bring in traffic. Snowball Rentals believes this is unlikely to be fully opened up during 2026, but the platform’s strategic direction will not reverse.
Traffic will become an important part of future competitiveness.
3. A new traffic allocation mechanism: discounts only for highly rated guests
The third area being tested could bring genuine structural change to the industry.
According to industry reports, Airbnb is testing a new traffic allocation mechanism: hosts willing to offer particular discounts receive additional exposure. But these discounts are not available to all guests—only well-rated guests with scores of 4.8 or higher.
This design is significant. Airbnb has not adopted a model where the biggest advertising spender ranks first; it remains oriented toward completed transactions.
This time, however, the platform directs discounts to good guests while strengthening behavioral screening through traffic allocation. It is reshaping the guest mix, rather than simply selling traffic.
4. Guests begin bearing the cost of their behavior
Over the past two years, many hosts have felt that platform rules strongly favor guests. Some guests can make malicious complaints or opportunistic claims at very little cost.
Even negative reviews from hosts have limited practical effect.
If the new traffic allocation mechanism is fully implemented, that could change.
Highly rated guests will get better prices and access to better properties. Low-rated guests may gradually lose their competitive advantage and even risk being unable to book quality accommodation. For the first time, guests would genuinely bear the cost of their behavior.
This could make the balance between hosts and guests less one-sided, substantially reduce malicious behavior, and move the platform toward a healthier cycle.
In the long term, that is good news for hosts. Obtaining positive reviews could even become easier. Rather than worrying about short-term fluctuations in ratings, pay more attention to the structural changes taking place on the platform.
5. A deeper strategy: the possibility of a Guest Loyalty Program
If the platform starts systematically rewarding highly rated guests, what is the most logical next step? Snowball Rentals believes Airbnb may introduce a Guest Loyalty Program resembling airline mileage programs.
Quality guests would be retained on the platform through accumulating points, tiered benefits, exclusive prices and preferential exposure.
This would create a closed loop of traffic, segmentation, retention and renewed monetization. Airbnb would become a complete travel traffic ecosystem, rather than merely a transaction platform matching hosts and guests.
Conclusion: which hosts will make money in the future?
Taken together, these changes suggest a restructuring of roles rather than a single feature update. Hosts become traffic nodes, influencers become referral partners, guests are managed in tiers, and the platform monetizes multiple dimensions through traffic operations.
If this direction holds, the hosts who truly make money in the future will not simply know how to manage homes. They will know how to use traffic, understand the platform’s logic and establish their place in the ecosystem early.
The trend is already emerging. The key question is whether you have prepared in advance, rather than whether it will happen.
If you:

Then:

From pre-launch vacation-rental styling, big-data analysis and online marketing to tenant screening, dynamic pricing, customer service and sales, cleaning and repairs, Snowball Rentals provides everything as one complete service for your home.
This Week’s Booking Results
Through long-standing relationships with insurers, assignment companies and technology companies, Snowball Rentals rents homes for medium- and long-term durations at short-term rates, then gives owners a rebate of 5% in management fees to maximize their income.
As we enter the new year, Seattle’s short-term rental market remains in its slow season. How did you do last year?
Short-term rentals in peak season; mid-term rentals in low season.
Looking back at the large bookings we recently received, this strategy has produced some results and helped us remain confident even during the cold winter!
For the detached house in Renton below, Zillow shows an estimated long-term monthly rent of approximately $4964.
With the owner’s trust and support, we carefully furnished the home and immediately began short-term rental operations. Fortunately, because the home’s condition and location are both good, short- and mid-term bookings have continued to come in.
As shown in the booking screenshot below, this home recently received a large booking:
The booking is for June 27 to July 27, a total of 30 nights, equivalent to an average monthly rent of $17320.
In summary, under Snowball Rentals’ management, this home’s monthly rental income rose from $4964 to $17320, with an increase of “more than nearly 2.5 times.”

For homeowners, combining short- and mid-term rentals in this way can earn more in peak season and help them get through low season smoothly. Even if the low-season rental figures look less dramatic, they still outperform long-term rentals and give homeowners a strong sense of financial security.
More importantly, the owner does not have to worry about maintenance or cleaning. When something needs to be discussed with guests, we also help with communication and oversight.
Here, we again thank the owner for placing trust in the Snowball Rentals team!
After nearly two years of Airbnb’s downturn, we at Snowball Rentals hope to help owners make steady progress in low season, navigate the challenges safely and lay a better foundation for next year’s peak season.
Once again, heartfelt thanks to our homeowners for their trust and support. Whether the market is strong or weak, Snowball Rentals will stand with you and look for ways to increase your income!
Some homeowners will surely ask the hard question: was a large booking like this just a stroke of luck? What if the home does not rent? A long-term rental is more stable—even earning less is better than earning nothing!
Our answer is: the outcome depends on what we do.
Vacation-Rental Styling
Competition on Airbnb is becoming increasingly intense. The days of piecing together secondhand furniture, taking phone photos and earning easy money on Airbnb are over. Airbnb hosts have moved toward professional operations.
Careful design and furnishing before launch, followed by professional short-term rental operations, will be the only choice for a rental that continues to generate high income.
Here is another of Snowball Rentals’ core services: vacation-rental styling!
